Why Flit exists

Your garden is home
to somebody.

Every plant can be part of a bigger story. Flit helps you understand those connections, and find ways to care for your little part of the world.

Hello, I’m Jordan

A garden changed my plans.

In late 2020 I moved out of my city centre apartment and found myself for the first time the owner of a mature garden. Initially I had big plans, involving lots of decking, lighting and (forgive me) perhaps even a hot tub...

That was until I got to know the locals. Within weeks of moving in and looking out the back window whilst making my coffee, I started to notice an ever expanding cast of characters.

The blackbird picking and hunting through the fallen leaves. The grey squirrel emptying my neighbour’s bird feeder. The robin whose expectant stare back at me gave me the impression I owed him something.

I slowly realised that this garden wasn’t just mine to do as I liked. It was instead, mine to take care of.

Flit brings together 20 years of building software and everything that garden taught me. I’m building it to help you get to know the locals in your own garden, and find small ways to make them feel at home.

More of my story, and the gardens behind Flit

So I changed my question: how could I help the things already using it, and welcome even more?

That became years of small experiments: a barrel pond, then a wildlife pond; a native hedgerow, a little wildflower patch, and bird boxes. I began to see the garden through the lives that depended on it.

I’m now transforming a smaller garden, bringing what I learned in the old one with me. It’s still a work in progress.

Learning how much trouble nature was in across the UK made me want to help beyond my own fence. Flit grew out of that wish: to help other people notice the life around them, understand it, and find ways to care for it.
